The museum’s work includes preserving the stories of Holocaust resistors, known as the Righteous Among the Nations. Those recognized by the State of Israel as one of the Righteous Among the Nations did not merely save Jews, but were willing to risk their lives for their deeds. To date, 24,811 individuals from 47 different countries have been officially recognized as Righteous Among the Nations. At a time of moral collapse, this small minority mustered extraordinary courage to uphold human values and stand in stark contrast to the mainstream of indifference and hostility that prevailed during the holocaust. Yad Vashem’s inspiring new exhibition, “I Am My Brother’s Keeper – 50 Years of Honoring Righteous Among Nations,” pays tribute to the courageous deeds of the Righteous Among the Nations and to the resilience and determination of those who survived the Holocaust. The exhibition makes use of state-of-the-art multimedia productions to bring the actual voices of both the rescuers and those who were rescued to the audience, reflecting upon their moral choices, and engaging the audience to contemplate how spontaneous, intuitive decisions can make a difference and save lives. The exhibition runs May 14 to Aug. 15. A talk will be held at 5 p.m. May 14 followed by a reception will be held at 6 p.m. Street parking only during school year, on-campus parking during summer.

Location: Jot Travis Building

 Jun 2 12pm - Jun 20 Tehching Hsieh: One Year Performance 1980-1981

Beginning in 1980, Tehching Hsieh punched a time clock 8,760 times over the course of a yearlong performance. He issued a statement, shaved his head, donned a uniform and began a project that pushed at the limits of human endurance. Hsieh essentially denied himself sleep, given the self-imposed requirement to punch the clock hourly. To do so, he needed multiple alarm clocks attached to amplifiers to penetrate his befogged brain. Hsieh put himself in “a mindful state of delirium that forced confrontation with time itself;” he also generated a “physical model of time passing” with 8,760 timecards and corresponding documentary photographs. That year, Hsieh felt like Sisyphus, he said, engaged in a futile task that nonetheless gave his life purpose and structure. In a contemporary cultural moment overwhelmed by digital noise, image overload and information mayhem, the ritualized analogue life of Hsieh during this yearlong performance feels like a contemporary critique from the near past. This artwork nurtures the beginnings of meaningful conversations about spirituality, meaning, labor, daily life and the creative spirit. Thought of as the godfather of performance art, Hsieh's work as a performance artist is foundational to the art form. The is the second time this work will be seen in the United States after its previous installation at the Guggenheim in New York City. The exhibition runs April 16-June 21. An artist talk will be held at 5 p.m. April 16 at the Wells Fargo Auditorium in the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center, followed by a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. at Sheppard Contemporary.

Location: Church Fine Arts

Jun 4 4pm - Jun 27 Flo Oy Wong: You Gotta Be Brave

Influenced by the contemporary artists, Faith Ringgold, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, and Joseph Cornell, Flo Oy Wong makes art that speaks of personal, family, community, cultural and historical stories. To retrieve these narratives, she interviews people she finds heroic in order to explore disquieting matters that transform her and viewers to a place of healing, connecting and understanding. Oy Wong uses cloth rice sacks, sequins, beads, old suitcases, scanned photographs, magazine text, Chinese funeral paper, flags of the United States, needle, and thread to create mixed-media installations. In acknowledgement of her identity as an American of Chinese descent, Flo Oy Wong frequently uses Chinese and English text in her work.
