Part 1: Foundation Setting

Aim: Explore prevention structures (Universal, Selective, Indicated), understand school culture and priorities, and address implementation barriers with equity considerations for population and geographic factors. By the end of Part 1, participants will be able to:

Presented by: Gabe Teran, a 20-year professional in youth and community advocacy work. He is a leading subject matter expert in the fields of substance use prevention and youth development and has provided high-quality, engaging, prevention-focused workshops at statewide and national conferences.

Gabe has provided direct services to young people for the entirety of his career—many of them hailing from historically challenged communities. He has also served in our education system, directly overseen substance use prevention initiatives, and developed youth leadership programming. His extensive experience now allows him to provide tailored educational consulting services for schools and community-serving organizations.

Gabe holds a Master of Science degree in Management and Leadership, as well as two certifications for substance use disorder counseling in the state of California.

Continuing Education Units:

Participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance for 1.5 hours for each live webinar attended, for a maximum of 3 hours if they participate in both parts. Participants will need to confirm with their certification board to determine if these certification hours are accepted towards their specific certification requirements.

The program is completely online through the University of Nevada, Reno Extension. The program includes pre-recorded lectures, reading, homework, and live Q & A sessions every Thursday from 12 - 1 p.m. with horticulture professionals.

Identify the types of wounds and infections encountered in PWUD.Understand basic wound assessment and treatment options.Develop a harm reduction approach to wound care in PWUD. Reduce wound stigma in individuals with substance use disorders.Presented by: Michael Huyck DNP, FNP, CARN-AP

Michael Huyck is a Family and Addiction Nurse Practitioner with the University of Illinois at Chicago Community Outreach Intervention Projects where he focuses on integrating substance use disorder treatment and primary care in settings such as syringe exchanges, mobile, and street health programs. His clinical interests include piloting evidenced based interventions to address problems specific to populations with substance use disorders including wound care, ultrasound-guided phlebotomy, and low barrier access to medications for the treatment of Opioid Use Disorder.

The Biomarker Hunt is a collaborative research challenge where undergraduate and graduate students work in teams to analyze real transcriptomics (RNA-seq) and proteomics (DIA) datasets using modern computational biology approaches.

Rather than following step-by-step tutorials, participants learn by doing. making analytical decisions, exploring large datasets, troubleshooting challenges, developing biological hypotheses, and communicating their discoveries. The program emphasizes creativity, critical thinking, reproducible research, data visualization, and scientific communication while introducing participants to multi-omics data analysis.

Throughout the challenge, teams will perform quality control, identify differentially expressed genes and proteins, investigate biological pathways, explore candidate biomarkers, and integrate transcriptomic and proteomic results to answer authentic research questions.

The program concludes with a three-minute team flash talk, where participants present their findings. Awards recognize creativity, innovation, analytical thinking, effective data visualization, and scientific communication.

Required background: Basic R programming experience and an introductory understanding of statistics. Undergraduate and graduate students from all disciplines are welcome.

“92 Events” presents 92 works spanning six decades by American-born Swedish Fluxus artist Ken Friedman. Through conceptual, action-oriented and language-based works that engage with everyday life, Friedman challenges the notion of the artwork as a unique object. This unorthodox exhibition extends the length of the Lilley Museum’s Front Door Gallery and throughout the entire third floor of the University Foundation Arts Building. At the conclusion of the exhibition, visitors will participate in dismantling the installation.

Bees are essential to our food systems, gardens, and natural landscapes, yet honeybee and native bee populations face growing challenges. Join UNR Extension Douglas County Bee & Pollinator Club for a free educational series designed to help gardeners, landowners, and bee enthusiasts better understand and support pollinator health.

Across four engaging sessions, local experts will cover:

🐝 September 2 Honeybee Nutrition — What bees need to thrive, from foraging habits to the nutritional value of different plants and forage sources.

🌾 September 30 Land Management for Honeybees — Discover practical strategies for creating and maintaining habitat that supports healthy honeybee colonies, from forage plantings to seasonal land care. This session also introduces Nevada's native bee species, exploring their unique needs and how thoughtful land management can benefit both honeybees and native pollinators alike.

🌍 October 14 Environmental Stressors — The challenges facing honeybee colonies today, including pests, disease, pesticides, and climate impacts, and what beekeepers and land stewards can do to minimize risk.

Whether you're a backyard gardener, a landowner, or simply curious about protecting our pollinators, this series offers practical, science-based knowledge you can apply right away.

The program is completely online through the University of Nevada, Reno Extension. The program includes pre-recorded lectures, reading, homework, and live Q & A sessions every Thursday from 12 - 1 p.m. with horticulture professionals.

The Home Horticulture Certificate Program is a pre-requisite for those interested in becoming a Master Gardener volunteer. Learn more about the Master Gardener program by visiting our website.

Want to get involved in 4-H Shooting Sports? Join our Clark County air pistol and air rifle club, The Silver State Shooters. Youth will learn how to safely and responsibly use equipment, practice the principles of shooting, and much more! This event is open to all youth ages 9-19. Description

The purpose of this training is to provide participants with a detailed overview ofmedications that have been shown to be effective as a component of the treatment ofalcohol use disorder. Topics will include: the context for medications for addiction treatment (positive and negative perceptions); the epidemiology of alcohol use and alcohol use disorder; a review of each FDA-approved medication, its indication, to whom it is administered, and how it works; and treatment settings for medication for alcohol use disorder treatment. Medications will include: acamprosate, disulfiram, andnaltrexone. The training will conclude with a session on talking with clients who areambivalent about medications, and strategies to increase access and engage patients in care. Time will be provided throughout the training for discussion and questions.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this presentation, participants will:

Name at least three (3) acute and chronic effects of alcohol.

Identify the prevalence of and list three (3) key populations impacted by alcohol use disorder.

Specify three (3) medications that are available to treat alcohol use disorder.

Apply at least two (2) strategies that can be used to increase patient engagement and access to medications for alcohol use disorder.

Thomas E. Freese, PhD., is the Director of the UCLA Integrated Substance Use andAddiction Programs (ISAP) and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychiatry. Additionally, he serves as Director of Training and Dissemination for the Division of Addiction Psychiatry in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Co-Director ofthe SAMHSA-funded Pacific Southwest (HHS Region 9) Addictions Technology Transfer Center (PSATTC), and Co-PI of the Training and Dissemination contract with DHCS for the Recovery Incentives Program: California’s Contingency Management Benefit and with MT DPHHS for the HEART Demonstration: Montana’s Contingency Management Program. Dr. Freese conducts evidence-based trainings on a wide variety of topics including addressing the stimulant and opioid epidemics, the intersection of HIV, homelessness, and substance use, implementing integrated treatment, and implementing evidence-based treatment practices. He has been a featured presenter at conferences and meetings across the US and internationally.

Beth A. Rutkowski, MPH, has been associated with UCLA Integrated Substance Use and Addiction Programs (ISAP) since December 2000, and currently serves as the Director of Training, Co-Director of the SAMHSA-funded Pacific Southwest AddictionTechnology Transfer Center, and Co-Principal Investigator of Training and Implementation Support for both the Recovery Incentives Program: California’s Contingency Management Benefit and the HEART Demonstration: Montana’s Contingency Management Program. Ms. Rutkowski leads the development of synchronous and asynchronous training and intensive technical assistance activities and products and based on evidence-based substance use disorder treatment interventions and recovery approaches and organizes and conducts conferences and trainings throughout the Pacific Southwest region (HHS Region 9, covering AZ, CA, HI, NV, and the six U.S. Affiliated Pacific Jurisdictions). She has co-authored and edited dozens of peer reviewed research articles, book chapters, special issues, and technical reports on substance use disorder treatment.

Participants will explore the difference between trauma‑informed and healing‑centered approaches, and will leave with concrete co‑regulation tools and grief‑aware practices they can bring into their work with Native communities in Nevada, including conversations about opioid use, treatment, and recovery.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

Differentiate between trauma‑informed and healing‑centered approaches to grief in Native communities, particularly in the context of overdose deaths and substance‑related losses.Describe how grief and historical trauma can show up in bodies, emotions, behaviors, and relationships for Indigenous clients and for providers themselves—and how this impacts engagement in opioid‑related services.Identify at least two concrete practices they can use to co‑regulate with clients (and themselves) during times of grief, crisis, or emotional overwhelm, including when discussing opioid use and treatment options.Develop at least one realistic commitment for integrating grief‑aware, culturally grounded practices into their work settings to support both client healing and provider sustainability in opioid‑related and behavioral health work.Intended Audience: Behavioral health providers, healthcare providers, peer support specialists, community health workers, and others working with tribal communities in Nevada, with particular relevance for rural and tribal partners.

Presented by: Casandra (Cas) Stouder, ORN Consultant, Tribal Southwest (Region 9), Diné (Navajo) & Seminole

Casandra (Cas) Stouder is Diné (Navajo) and Seminole and has spent more than 24 years working alongside Indigenous communities through trauma, addiction, recovery, and systems change. She is an Indigenous wellness consultant and Trauma & Systems Transformation Facilitator, and serves as a Technical Support Specialist with the Opioid Response Network (Southwest), supporting tribal communities in designing culturally grounded substance use and opioid‑related prevention and healing initiatives.

Cas has delivered over 1,000 professional trainings and supported more than 1,900 community wellness and prevention efforts. Her work braids ACEs/NEAR science, Indigenous trauma science, Medicine Wheel‑based brain frameworks, and somatic practice with traditional knowledge. She has developed multiple Indigenous recovery and wellness programs, including Sacred Path to Recovery and Medicine Wheel Wellness, and serves as an Arizona ACEs Educational Trainer and Indigenous Community Subcommittee Chair for the Arizona ACEs Consortium.

A Native woman in long‑term recovery, Cas brings deep lived experience, ceremony, and careful, prayerful practice to her work. She is recognized as Arizona’s Preeminent Health Innovation Leader (2025) and Best Rural Women’s Health Practitioner (2025).

Join us from September 11 to October 29 for Eating Smart • Being Active (ESBA), a free, hands-on nutrition program for adults who want to eat healthier, save money, and feel better every day.

Through a series of interactive, 90-minute sessions, participants will learn how to plan balanced, budget-friendly meals, read nutrition labels, prepare safe and tasty meals, and add easy physical activity to daily routines. Lessons are family-friendly, practical, and focused on healthy habits you can keep for life.

This program has been proven to help participants eat more fruits and vegetables, improve food safety at home, manage food resources effectively, and move more each day.

Participants are encouraged to attend the full series to gain the most benefit, as each lesson builds on the previous one. Free take-home items will be provided at every class, and participants who attend at least 5 of the 6 lessons will receive a graduation certificate. Classes will be offered in English.

Due to limited space, we kindly encourage participants to arrive on time. To help maintain a quality learning experience for everyone, late entry may be limited after the first 15 minutes of the program. We truly appreciate your understanding, punctuality, and participation!

Want to get involved in 4-H? Join our Clark Archery Club, the "4-H Vegas Rangers" where youth will learn marksmanship, the safe and responsible use of equipment, the principles of archery, and much more! All youth ages 9-19 are welcome and no archery experience is required.

In 2021, the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development contracted with the University Center for Economic Development, a part of the College of Business at the University of Nevada, Reno, to collaborate with relevant stakeholders and each of Nevada’s 28 federally recognized Native American Tribes and Indigenous colonies, communities, and reservations in Nevada in developing a comprehensive community and economic development strategic plan benefiting these tribal entities. The resulting public document, UCED Technical Report 2023/24-10, A Statewide Nevada Native American Community and Economic Development Strategy, 2024 through 2029, published in December 2023, was presented to tribal leaders in January 2024. This past January 2026, during the Tribal Leaders Summit hosted by the Nevada Native Nations Center, a part of the Nevada Tech Hub, attendees participated in an exercise to evaluate the statewide strategy. Following recommendations from this exercise, the Office of Indigenous Relations will host regional workshops to address feedback provided during the 2026 Tribal Leader Summit. These workshops are intended to strengthen the strategy’s function as an operational framework supporting tribal sovereignty, intergovernmental coordination, and long-term economic resilience.

Discuss which varieties are promising in this climate and learn about site selection, irrigation, pest and disease control, pruning and soil nutrition management. If you are considering commercial orchard production, this workshop will give you a broad overview to optimize health, yield and profitability. The workshop includes classroom training, a walk through the Desert Farming Initiative's (DFI) apple orchard and finish off the day with a tasting of Nevada-grown fruit!

Rex Dufour, Senior Fellow at the National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT), specializing in organic agricultural practices, ecological pest management, and soil health. With decades of experience, he has worked with fruit and nut growers across the Western United States on sustainable farming practices. Rex has presented at Nevada agricultural workshops and conferences, and has built lasting friendships with Nevada farmers over more than a decade.

Want to get involved in 4-H? Join our Clark Archery Club, the "4-H Vegas Rangers" where youth will learn marksmanship, the safe and responsible use of equipment, the principles of archery, and much more! All youth ages 9-19 are welcome and no archery experience is required.

Description

This course is designed to teach clinicians bottom-up approaches for autonomic nervous system regulation in addictive disorders. When clients are stuck in a chronic physiological state of nervous system dysregulation, talk therapy alone might not suffice in restoring a sense of safety.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this presentation, participants will:

Explain how trauma affects the nervous system and contributes to substance use and addiction.

Describe the principles of neuroscience and polyvagal theory that support embodied, trauma-informed interventions.

Identify trauma-informed practices, including yoga, breathwork, and somatic grounding techniques, that promote nervous system regulation.

Apply a practical framework for integrating embodied, trauma-informed interventions into existing treatment protocols

NRAP’s R5k Run/Walk & Recovery Celebration is held to promote community health and wellness, celebrate individuals in recovery and reduce the stigma often associated with addiction. The R5k will provide an opportunity for participants to walk/run for themselves, or in honor of someone they know impacted by substance use, followed by a recovery celebration open to all community members. The post-race celebration is free and open to the public regardless of 5k participation. The celebration will include food, family activities, and local guest speakers and advocates who are in recovery. Community organizations will be providing information on local services and present on relevant topics.

Why Participate?

Your support will help support students who identify as being in recovery or those students choosing a substance-free lifestyle have a positive experience while attending the University and strengthen NRAP’s ability to change the stigma associated with non-substance use on our college campuses.

NRAP’s R5k Run/Walk & Recovery Celebration is held to promote community health and wellness, celebrate individuals in recovery, and reduce the stigma often associated with addiction. The R5k will provide an opportunity for participants to walk/run in honor of someone they know impacted by substance use, followed by a recovery celebration open to all community members. The post-race celebration is free and open to the public regardless of 5k participation. The celebration will include food, family activities, and local guest speakers and advocates who are in recovery. Community organizations will provide information on local services and present on relevant topics.

In 2021, the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development contracted with the University Center for Economic Development, a part of the College of Business at the University of Nevada, Reno, to collaborate with relevant stakeholders and each of Nevada’s 28 federally recognized Native American Tribes and Indigenous colonies, communities, and reservations in Nevada in developing a comprehensive community and economic development strategic plan benefiting these tribal entities. The resulting public document, UCED Technical Report 2023/24-10, A Statewide Nevada Native American Community and Economic Development Strategy, 2024 through 2029, published in December 2023, was presented to tribal leaders in January 2024. This past January 2026, during the Tribal Leaders Summit hosted by the Nevada Native Nations Center, a part of the Nevada Tech Hub, attendees participated in an exercise to evaluate the statewide strategy. Following recommendations from this exercise, the Office of Indigenous Relations will host regional workshops to address feedback provided during the 2026 Tribal Leader Summit. These workshops are intended to strengthen the strategy’s function as an operational framework supporting tribal sovereignty, intergovernmental coordination, and long-term economic resilience.

Join the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy for an updated overview of AB156, including the regulatory framework, pharmacist authorization process, and the current status of pharmacist-prescribed MOUD in Nevada. This presentation is designed for healthcare professionals, behavioral health providers, public health practitioners, and others interested in expanding access to evidence-based treatment for opioid use disorder.

Darla Zarley obtained her Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree from North Dakota State University. Upon graduation she worked for a local chain pharmacy as a staff pharmacist, pharmacy manager and market trainer. In 2001 Dr. Zarley joined Roseman University of Health Sciences College of Pharmacy. As the Director of Experiential Education, her responsibilities included coordinating Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience rotations for P3 students in addition to teaching pharmacy law and pharmacy calculations.

On June 1, 2018, Darla Zarley began working as a Grant & Project Analyst for the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy’s Prescription Monitoring Program. Her role is to oversee the daily operations of the Prescription Monitoring Program which includes the management of grant activities, assisting users with registration, and trouble-shooting PMP related issues.

Bees are essential to our food systems, gardens, and natural landscapes, yet honeybee and native bee populations face growing challenges. Join UNR Extension Douglas County Bee & Pollinator Club for a free educational series designed to help gardeners, landowners, and bee enthusiasts better understand and support pollinator health.

Across four engaging sessions, local experts will cover:

🐝 September 2 Honeybee Nutrition — What bees need to thrive, from foraging habits to the nutritional value of different plants and forage sources.

🌾 September 30 Land Management for Honeybees — Discover practical strategies for creating and maintaining habitat that supports healthy honeybee colonies, from forage plantings to seasonal land care. This session also introduces Nevada's native bee species, exploring their unique needs and how thoughtful land management can benefit both honeybees and native pollinators alike.

The program is completely online through the University of Nevada, Reno Extension. The program includes pre-recorded lectures, reading, homework, and live Q & A sessions every Thursday from 12 - 1 p.m. with horticulture professionals.

Students in grades 6–12 are eligible to create an original poster about radon for a chance to win a prize. The 1st place poster from Nevada will also be submitted to the national contest. Posters must be submitted by November 6, 2026.

In the early 1960s, Dean David W. Heron and print history scholar Robert Armstrong began the process of organizing the University’s rare materials, manuscripts, and institutional historical records into a distinct unit within the University Libraries. Special Collections and University Archives continues to flourish, innovate, and support research and education both on and off campus through the efforts of 65 years of knowledgeable, dedicated archivists and librarians.
