In April, the Nevada Alumni Association Book Club Members begin reading How to Read a Book by Monica Wood

Monica Wood is the author of four novels, including The One-in-a-Million Boy, winner of the 2017 Nautilus Gold Award and the New England Society fiction prize. Her novel Any Bitter Thing spent 21 weeks on the ABA extended bestseller list and was a Book Sense Top Ten pick. Other works include Ernie’s Ark and My Only Story, a Kate Chopin Award finalist. She also wrote the memoir When We Were the Kennedys, which earned the Maine Literary Award (2013) and the Sarton Women’s Literary Award (2012).

Why We Think How To Read a Book Will Hook You

A heartfelt novel about second chances, unlikely friendships, and the healing power of stories. Violet Powell, twenty-two and newly released from prison after a drunk-driving crash that killed a beloved teacher, returns to rural Maine. Harriet Larson, a retired English teacher who led Violet’s prison book club, now faces the quiet of an empty nest. Frank Daigle, a retired machinist, struggles to come to terms with the complicated marriage left behind by tragedy. When their paths cross in a Portland bookstore, an unexpected connection begins to transform their lives. How to Read a Book is an honest, hopeful story about guilt, forgiveness, and the kindness that makes life worth living.
