On Friday, January 2nd, Nevada Alumni Association Book Club Members begin reading The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon.

Ariel Lawhon is a New York Times bestselling author known for her richly researched and elegantly written historical fiction. Her novels include I Was Anastasia, Code Name Hélène, and Flight of Dreams which blend real events with gripping storytelling and unforgettable characters. Lawhon’s work often centers on underexamined women whose lives shaped history yet remained overlooked. The Frozen River continues this legacy, offering an atmospheric, meticulously crafted exploration of justice, resilience, and truth.

Why We Think The Frozen River Will Hook You

A man is discovered frozen in the Kennebec River and midwife Martha Ballard is pulled into a mystery connected to an assault she documented months earlier. When her findings are dismissed she seeks the truth on her own as tensions rise in her community. This story is gripping atmospheric and led by a courageous heroine whose determination makes it impossible to put down.
