Are you considering graduate school?

Did you know that one successful application could expand your graduate school and career options and provide $159,000 toward your graduate education?

The National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP) provides three years of support—including a $37,000 annual stipend and $16,000 per year for educational expenses—to students pursuing research-based graduate degrees.

To help you submit a competitive application, the Graduate School is hosting an in-person NSF GRFP Workshop:

Friday, April 24, 2026 | 12–1:30 p.m. | PSAC 114
RSVP deadline: Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at 5:00 p.m.
Pizza will be served!

RSVP FOR THE WORKSHOP NOW

 This workshop will cover:

  • An overview of the NSF GRFP application process
  • A faculty panel featuring former GRFP reviewers
  • Insights from UNR students who have received NSF GRFP awards
  • Attendees will also receive example applications, guidance on strengthening Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts, and—if you submit a complete draft—personalized feedback from the Graduate School and the Office of Research and Innovation in advance of the application deadline.

The NSF GRFP is one of the most prestigious fellowships available to aspiring researchers. Its impact extends far beyond graduate school, often helping recipients become leaders in research, policy, and teaching. Past Fellows include Nobel Prize winners, former U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, and economist Steven Levitt.

Eligibility: U.S. citizens or permanent residents by the application deadline.

We strongly encourage juniors and especially seniors planning to apply to graduate school to attend—and to seriously consider applying this fall, while you still have the advantage of multiple opportunities.

We hope to see many of you at our workshop! For questions, please contact Loren Pietsch in the Graduate School at lpietsch@unr.edu
