While hiking in the Sierra, have you ever come across an inscription in an unexpected language or an etching on an aspen tree?
Curious about what they are? Who, when and why they were created?
The thousands of lertxun-marrak, arborglyphs or tree carvings we see nowadays in the Sierra and other mountainous areas of the West, were written and drawn by Basque sheepherders in the 19th and 20th centuries. They depict personal names, dates, place names, animals and verses in Basque, Spanish, French and English.
Join us at the Jon Bilbao Basque Library on December 1st, 2025, 3:30-5:00 PM to meet experts from @One Digital Media and Technology Center, the University of the Basque Country, and the Basque Library, to learn about lertxun-marrak, the people that created them, and experience one day in a sheepherder's life through virtual reality.
