Community Connection: Understanding and Implementing Soil Health Practices for Nevada Farms and Gardens
At this educational Community Connection event join Chuck Schembre at the Desert Farming Initiative for a 2 hour crash course on soil health and learn practical information to implement soil health practices on your farm or garden. The event will include soil health demonstrations and a presentation, including:
- The fundamentals of soil health and regenerative agriculture
- The connection between Soil Health and Water
- Cover cropping in the Great Basin
- How to evaluate the health of your soil
- Interpreting soil lab tests and soil fertility
- An overview of soil health indicators
- Getting Started - The Regenerative mindset and journey
Chuck Schembre is an Environmental Scientist with the Nevada Bureau of Water Quality Planning, in the Nonpoint Source Program. He holds a certification as a Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control and earned a Bachelor degree in Earth and Soil Science from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Chuck has worked in the field of agricultural as an organic vegetable farmer, vineyard manager, erosion control specialist, soil scientist, and previously served as the Program Director for the UNR Desert Farming Initiative. Chuck has a deep passion and life quest for advancing soil health practices and regenerative ag to enhance farm resiliency and the health of communities. He developed a soil health monitoring program in Napa, CA and currently serves on the Western Cover Crop Council, among other committees. He currently assists and partners with many organizations and landowners to advance soil health practices in Nevada as a strategy to improve watershed function, and privates soil health consulting to select producers in Western NV. cschembre@ndep.nv.edu – soil and water conservation charlesschembre@gmail.com – soil health and crop fertility consulting services

Roughly every other Saturday morning the Desert Farming Initiative invites the community to join us on the farm to learn, lend a hand, and connect with the plants and each other.
