Contemporary Black Film And The Struggle For Freedom
In recent years, black filmmaking has been experiencing a renaissance. The critical and commercial success of Black Panther demonstrated the cultural significance and economic viability of a black Hollywood blockbuster. Smaller films like Get Out, Blindspotting, Sorry to Bother You and BlacKkKlansman employed a range of innovative film techniques, forms of storytelling, and visual styles to provide insightful commentary on race in America. Drawing on popular forms such as horror, detective fiction, the superhero story, black filmmakers have created diverse and nuanced expressions of political engagement and black self-expression.
Before you start working on your finals, come join us for a roundtable discussion of contemporary black film. We will view clips of popular films like Black Panther and Get Out, and we will discuss their meaning and significance in our contemporary moment.
