Core Humanities Speaker Series: "Another Lap in the Race: Arthur Schopenhauer on Suffering and Our Endless Striving"
About this event
The German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer believed that life “is an endless striving”. Every person has goals and desires, and everything a person does and refrains from doing can be explained in terms of striving towards their fulfillment. But Schopenhauer saw a dilemma inherent in our relentless striving. If we fail to achieve what we strive to achieve, we will be frustrated and unhappy. But if we are successful —and this is Schopenhauer’s crucial insight — we will immediately need something new towards which to strive, lest we fall into boredom and despair. Hence, suffering of one kind or another is unavoidable no matter how things work out.
