Title: The Science of Ghosts (and Creepy Things in General)

Abstract: Why does a dark hallway, an abandoned house, or an unexplained sound instantly make your skin crawl? In this spooky Discover Science lecture, evolutionary social psychologist, Frank McAndrew, explores the psychology of why people sometimes believe they’ve seen ghosts. Seeing ghosts and having paranormal experiences appears to have been a thing in virtually all human societies throughout our history as a species. And if you have ever seen a ghost yourself, you have something in common with 18% of Americans. This talk will examine the evolutionary roots of our tendency to get "creeped out" by certain people and places, and it will also explore why some of us are more susceptible to getting the heebie-jeebies than others.
