EXHIBIT: The Extraordinary Life of Dr. James E. Church

On display now at the Prim Library at the University of Nevada, Reno Lake Tahoe campus

The Extraordinary Life of Dr. James E. Church From Classics Professor to Father of Snow Surveying

This exhibit, curated by Jacquelyn Sundstrand, manuscripts librarian emerita using materias from University Libraries Special Collections and University Archives department, features materials from the James Edward Church Collection which contains both a physical collection and digital materials.

About the exhibit:

Living in the dry environment of a desert, one can wonder a lot about water. Knowing how much water was available, or would be available, in the summer and winter months was, and still can be a challenging question to try and answer.

Trained in the Classics, James E. Church came to the University of Nevada, Reno in 1892 to teach. While teaching languages and literature he began working to solve the question of how much moisture, or water content, could be found in snow.

Through his curiosity, Church figured out and perfected a way to measure snow moisture content along various snow course locations found across the Sierra Nevada. This helped establish Church as the “Father of Snow Surveying;” a practice still used to this day to measure moisture content in snow.

Can't make it to Lake Tahoe to see this in person?
