Additional Event Dates

Join the Department of English's Cinema and Media Studies Minor for an uproarious afternoon of feminist film comedy.

At 3pm, Professor Maggie Hennefeld will give a talk titled "Archives of Feminist Film Comedy," which covers her efforts to recover feminist film comedies that have been long unseen, poorly preserved, and even unrealized.

At 4:30, we'll screen the film program "Breaking Plates and Smashing the Patriarchy." The program of eleven short films is a conversation between the past and the present. The first short on the program, Breaking Plates (2024), is a contemporary docudrama inspired by the creative mayhem and wild physicality of Cinema’s First Nasty Women (the DVD set curated by Hennefeld), a collection of rarely seen silent films about feminist protest, slapstick rebellion, and suggestive gender play. Implicit in the energy and freshness of this New York Times-praised collection is a challenge from the women of the past to the women of the present to take charge of our stories the way they took charge of theirs.

Come celebrate funny women behaving badly!
