First Amendment Forum with Ike Bailey: "More Light, Less Heat"

As part of its First Amendment Forum speaker series, the Reynolds School of Journalism, in partnership with KUNR, is pleased to present a conversation with Ike Bailey entitled “More Light, Less Heat: Despite the Overblown Tension, Free Speech and DEI Need Each Other.” Please join us on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at 6 p.m. in the University of Nevada, Reno Joe Crowley Student Union Theatre.

Thanks to support provided by Warren and Janet Lerude, this event is free and open to the public. Thank you to our media partner, KUNR.

About the talk:

An ethos of diversity, equity, and inclusion not fortified by the principle of free expression will forever be bankrupt. The principle of free expression can’t truly be honored if not buttressed by the ethos of diversity, equity, and inclusion. For the 2023 Reynolds School of Journalism First Amendment Forum, we will consider why that truth has been overshadowed by debates pitting those complementary ideas against each other, and how to generate more light and less heat.

About Ike Bailey:

Ike Bailey is a Visiting Professor at Columbia University this spring and a long-term Professor of Practice for Davidson College, where he spearheaded an effort to adopt a freedom of expression statement that is unique for similarly-situated universities. He’s an author of three books and an award-winning veteran journalist who has been published by several dozen publications, including Time Magazine and the New York Times, and has been featured by NPR, MSNBC, CNN, among others.
