Fourth Annual UNR College of Liberal Arts Graduate Student Symposium (CLAGS)
The Fourth Annual UNR College of Liberal Arts Graduate Student Symposium (CLAGS) offers a window into the cutting edge of academic research regarding what is means to be human. This year's theme is Constructing the World. How individuals and groups invent, negotiate, respond, and interact with aesthetics, the built environment, personal relationships, the physical world, and society is central to unraveling how humans connect to one another. Scholars from multiple disciplines will offer insights into the artistic, cultural, economic, educational, historical, literary, philosophical, political, psychological, scientific, and sociological foundations of our world. Presenters will explore the role of architecture, art, bodies, class, conflict, community, disease, dress, drugs, ethnicity, film, gender, geography, language, music, nature perception, photography, poetry, race, religion, social media, and sexuality in the construction of the world.
This year’s CLAGS includes 73 graduate students in 25 disciplines from 13 universities, 3 symposium panels ("Historical Archaeology in Nevada," "Queering Class or Classing Queer," and "and "The Uses, Misuses, and Relevance of ‘Identity’ in Academia and Beyond"), an art exhibit featuring 4 visual artists, 2 musical performances, and 2 documentary films (“They Made us Homeless” and “Ki Na Sumoowakwatatu. Never To Be Forgotten”). We also have 2 guest speakers. Dr. Bill Brown will be giving a public lecture on Friday February 21 at 3pm “Re-Assemblage (Art and Artifactuality)” and Dr. Eduardo Subirats Professor Spanish & Portuguese at NYU will give the keynote address on Saturday February 21 at 5pm "Enlightenment in an Age of Destruction: An Intellectual Project"
