Canceled - Human Computers

Canceled until further notice

The University of Nevada, Reno presents a performance by artist-in-residence Jeff Thompson. Before computers were digital, some people performed calculations by hand on paper worksheets for scientific and mathematical research. It started as a cottage industry. This practice continued into the 1950s, even as human computers were replaced by the machines we use today. Sponsored by the School of the Arts, artist-in-residence Jeff Thompson will present “Human Computers.” A long-duration performance where a group of performers calculates by hand over many hours something straightforward for the computer to do: decode a JPG image. Inspired by historical examples of human computing, as well as early-to-mid-20th century offices, the automation of labor, and black-box algorithms, his performance is the physical enacting of a technology that is both pervasive and difficult to understand. “Human Computers” will be from 12-6 p.m. with a reception from 6-8 p.m.
