Leonard Lecture in Philosophy: Mike Martin (Berkeley - Oxford)
Although photographs only came into existence thousands of years after the first hand-drawn pictures, on an attractive view of depiction, photographs, as examples of natural images, have a priority in the explanation of depiction over hand-drawn images. We can reconcile history with such an approach to depiction, by treating hand-drawn images as examples of imagined natural images. But what does account demand of the role of imagination? This talk addresses the question.
