Local News Matters
Join the Reynolds School of Journalism for “Local News Matters,” the 2021 Cole Campbell Dialogues in Democracy on Tuesday, October 19, at 6 p.m. in the Nevada Museum of Art theatre. The event will be both in-person (limited seating) and available virtually. Free tickets can be reserved through Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/local-news-matters-tickets-171464042567
The program will include a short talk by Larry Ryckman, editor of the independent digital news organization The Colorado Sun, former Denver Post and AP editor and reporter, and an alumnus of the Reynolds School of Journalism. Ryckman will provide an overview of the crisis in local news across the country, as well as how some states, such as Colorado, are working to support and expand diverse sources of local news. He will then moderate a panel of local Nevada journalists, including Arianna Bennett, anchor and reporter at KTVN News, Michelle Billman, news director of KUNR Public Radio, Bob Conrad, publisher and editor of This is Reno, Brian Duggan, executive editor of the Reno Gazette Journal, and Jazmin Orozco Rodriguez, reporter at The Nevada Independent.
A trade-show reception with refreshments and a cash bar will follow the formal program, with local journalism organizations in attendance.
