NBMG Earth Science Week Field Trip 2023

This year, Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology is celebrating Earth Science Week with its 25th anniversary public field trip. In keeping with the theme of Geoscience Innovating for Earth and People, our 2023 field trip will take us on a tour of the Truckee and north Lake Tahoe areas, and the Truckee River west of Reno. We will discuss some aspects of the geosciences that are helping our mountain communities work towards healthier and increasingly sustainable lifestyles, while implementing environmental problem-solving in the Tahoe basin and beyond. We will discuss the geology and ecosystems in these regions, past mining and logging activities, landscape evolution, and natural hazards. We will also learn about microplastics in Lake Tahoe, which provides drinking water to downstream communities, and research that is being done to study these substances.

Location: Starts at Great Basin Science Sample and Records Library, 2175 Raggio Parkway, Reno, NV 89512, 8:00 am, Saturday, October 7, 2023. We will depart from the GBSSRL at 8:30 a.m sharp. Building will be open at 7:30 AM.
