About this event
Sapira Cheuk relies on both sumi and India ink in her delicate, abstract paintings. One ink is water soluble and the other not, creating depth and material tension in her monochromatic work. The negotiation of medium is constant, sometimes the inks blend together and sometimes they don’t, just part of the many bargains the artist makes between ornamentation and function, the ephemeral and the permanent, and the body and the spirit. The heart of the negotiation is a perennial question Cheuk asks in her practice, “what does it mean to make beautiful art?”
