Performing Arts Series presents a FREE dance workshop with La Mezcla
Join Vanessa Sanchez and members of La Mezcla for an introduction to Zapateado Jarocho, traditional footwork from Veracruz, Mexico. This class features live music and draws on the tradition of the Son Jarocho Fandango, a community gathering of music and dance. Vanessa is the Executive Artistic Director of La Mezcla, a polyrhythmic, multidisciplinary San Francisco-based dance and music ensemble rooted in Chicana, Latina and Indigenous traditions and social justice. Her dance and choreographic expression explores movement and rhythm to tell stories of historical oppression and collective resistance. In this class, dancers of all levels will learn traditional rhythms and footwork on a tarima, a wooden box built to amplify the percussive sounds from the footwork.
All levels welcome, hard soled shoes are recommended.
Space is limited. Pre-registration is required.
La Mezcla will be performing a featured Performing Arts Series production on Thursday, September 15. For more information visit unr.edu/pas.
