The University of Nevada, Reno's School of the Arts presents “Stories about Computers.” This symposium expands on themes in artist-in-residence Jeff Thompson’s project “Human Computers,” commissioned by the School of the Arts. The event will begin with a deep historical dig into the history of human computers and the PNG file format, followed by presentations on topics ranging from smartphone keyboards and motion capture, caricatures and facial recognition, social robots and questions of embodiment, code and the future of the book, and the “creation myths” of von Neumann. 

Speakers include Tyler Brownlow-Calkin (Art), Emily Hand (Computer Science), Casey Lynch (Geography), Joseph Squier (Art), Jeff Thompson, and Barbara Walker (History). 

The Sheppard Gallery is located within the Church Fine Arts building. General parking is available in the Brian Whalen Parking garage, located just north of Church Fine Arts. The main entrance to the Brian Whalen Parking garage is located on the east side of North Virginia Street, between 14th Street and 15th Street. Public metered parking is available at the first level of the Whalen parking complex. Parking is free on event nights after 7 p.m. and one-half hour prior to show time for events starting earlier than 5 p.m. Disabled parking is available on all floors.
