TORN BY LIGHT: Triennial Faculty Art Exhibition
Sheppard Contemporary and University Galleries are pleased to present Torn by Light, the triennial faculty art exhibition at the University of Nevada, Reno. This exhibition features recent work from over forty participating artists including tenured and tenure-track faculty, emeritus faculty, as well as extending its scope to include actively working artists in the Department of Art, Art History & Design who serve as administrative faculty, staff, lecturers, and adjunct teaching faculty. Torn By Light extends to include artists who serve as faculty at the UNR-Lake Tahoe campus as well as the most recent Visiting Artist Faculty in the MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts program who teach at UNR remotely year-round from locations ranging from New York and Los Angeles to Berlin. The exhibition title refers to a 1993 poetry collection from the late Nevada artist and poet Joanne de Longchamps edited by poet Shaun Griffin.
2025 marks the 65th anniversary of University Galleries, the 60th anniversary of Black Rock Press, and the 10th anniversary of the MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts graduate program now based at our UNR at Lake Tahoe campus. We are thrilled to celebrate the occasions with this exhibition from our dynamic and dedicated artist faculty.

About Sheppard Contemporary
Sheppard Contemporary is an art exhibition space located on the campus of University of Nevada, Reno. The flagship gallery at UNR, Sheppard Gallery opened in 1960 and is one of many exhibition spaces at UNR. Sheppard Contemporary and University Galleries maintain close relationships with The Lilley Museum at UNR, and the galleries at UNR-Lake Tahoe campus. Exhibitions feature work from contemporary artists, regional and international. The gallery engages the university, the growing Reno arts communities, and the region at large by exhibiting innovative, contemporary art work. The gallery maintains a full and intensive program of professional exhibitions.
Sheppard Contemporary is located in the Church Fine Arts Building and is generally open to the public Monday through Thursday, 12pm-4pm, and by appointment. General parking is available in the Brian Whalen Parking garage, located just north of Church Fine Arts. The main entrance to the Brian Whalen Parking garage is located on the east side of North Virginia Street, between 14th Street and 15th Street. Public metered parking is available at the lowest level of the Whalen parking complex, though parking on Saturdays is free.
