Two Ends of a Long Line: Anita Maksimiuk & Rachel Stiff

Two Ends of a Long Line pairs the work of two artists both engaged in a practice of imaging the landscape, responding differently to ideas of hope, promise, devastation, and upheaval. From the atmospheric spaces of the West in Stiff paintings, to the sites of urban infrastructure and decay in Maksimiuk’s prints, both artists reflect on the idea and physicality of the American landscape, often gritty, charred, and glowing.

Anita Maksimiuk is a printmaker working primarily in stone lithography, screen-print and intaglio. She is a first-generation American born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Her work is driven by the historic promise of the American Dream, urban upheaval and the importance of image as both document and memento. Her process often combines print media, working a memory-strewn landscape back into existence by sleight of hand. Motivated by love, rage, and adventure by way of endurance, Maksimiuk’s prints have been exhibited throughout the United States and traveled as far as Kyiv, Ukraine. Maksimiuk received her BFA from New York's Cooper Union School of Art and her MFA from the University of Arizona. She currently teaches printmaking in gorgeous Tucson, Arizona.

Rachel Stiff is a mixed media artist and tenured faculty member at Western Nevada College in Carson City. Originally from rural Montana, her early experiences in vast, open landscapes continue to shape her abstract interpretations of the modern West. Stiff’s work examines the construction of the modern landscape and the desert-urban interface through abstraction. Her visual language reflects the contradictory qualities of the high desert: spaces that feel simultaneously timeless and in constant flux. Through drawing, painting, printmaking, and immersive observation, her practice captures the subtle, shifting transitions of light, color, and form across geologic and human time. Her work has been exhibited widely throughout the American West and is held in the collections of Traktor Films and the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art. Stiff was a featured artist in Tilting the Basin: Contemporary Art of Nevada, a major statewide survey organized by the Nevada Museum of Art. She holds an MFA from the University of Arizona and a BFA from the University of Montana.
