About this event
Coursework and research in the social sciences and humanities tends to be oriented toward academic careers, despite the fact that the vast majority of people with degrees in the liberal arts do not remain in academia. In this talk, anthropologist Chris Golias outlines his path from graduate school to Senior User Experience Researcher (UXR) studying the quality of Google’s localization around the world. In process, he will highlight careers for liberal arts degree holders in technology development, the importance of social scientists on product teams, the methodologies UXRs deploy to understand users/customers, the traits and skills technology companies value from the liberal arts and what students of all levels can do now to position themselves as attractive employees in the technology industry.
This talk is for anyone curious about how to apply their liberal arts degree in the technology sector or anyone interested in the value and impact of such careers within technology development.
Chris Golias, Ph.D., is a technology anthropologist, currently with Google, who has conducted applied research across various sectors including retail, healthcare, Indigenous rights, substance use, ecommerce, ecological design, AI, and localization. He holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania.
This talk is sponsored by the UNR Data Science Initiative, a grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (GM103440) from the National Institutes of Health.
