As a photojournalist, Rubio offers intimate glimpses into diverse communities, while Nunez captures the quiet and often overlooked moments of everyday life, memory, and belonging through his snapshot photos. The exhibition serves as an extension of Without Mountains and Rivers Without End.

Alejandra Rubio is a visual artist and photojournalist who works with photography and mixed media. She often embeds herself into different cultures and subcultures to share their voices, experiences and inflections, providing viewers with a respectful glimpse into their unique worldviews, concerns and aspirations.

Rubio is a member of the Yavapai-Apache Nation and grew up in Camp Verde, a rural river valley in northern Arizona, where she learned the value of the interdependent relationships between land, culture and community. While growing up, she also learned the power of sharing stories as a means of transferring knowledge and reaffirming cultural practices. Her work provides an analytical, compassionate and uniquely Native American lens from which to view, engage, learn and share the full range of human emotion and experience across cultures and subcultures — off the reservation and on the reservation. Her work navigates the complexity of the human spirit, in private, intimate and honest settings, affording her audience a respectful view into lives and socially defined relationships of people who would otherwise remain invisible, unknown, or isolated in the shadows. The breadth and diversity of my work includes photographs covering Brothels - including the Moonlight Bunny Ranch, hotel living, drugs, protests, white supremacists, biker gangs, satanism, extreme fitness, and Native American ceremonies.

Rubio’s work has been published in The New York Times, as well as numerous other publications.

As a photographer, Robert Nunez finds the melancholic and often overlooked moments of everyday life, capturing the fleeting intersections of nostalgia and identity. The work reflects the complexities of the artist's experience as a first-generation American and the child of Mexican immigrants, exploring the tension between the vibrant cultural heritage of his upbringing and the disorienting process of assimilation into American society.

Inspired by a deep-seated desire to share a unique narrative, his work creates images that document the contrast between his public persona and private reality. This dichotomy manifests in visual storytelling, revealing the subtle and often unnoticed aspects of life that resonate with his own sense of loss and belonging.

The artistic process is organic and unstructured. Carrying a camera throughout the day, moments that evoke a strong emotional response are seized, whether walking through the city, driving home from work, or spending time with family.

Nunez is continuously attuned to the ordinary yet poignant instances that define daily existence. Viewers are invited to engage with the work on a personal level, finding their own meanings and reflections within the images. The intention is not to impose a singular narrative but to offer a window into the nuances of the artist's experience, allowing each observer to connect with the work in a way that resonates with their own perspectives.

More of Rubio and Nunez’s work is currently exhibited in Sheppard Contemporary.

Without Mountains and Rivers Without End: Speculative Geographics on an Interior Northwest at Sheppard Contemporary Gallery

This weird and dynamic show of fourteen artists, poets, and musicians takes the focus of the geo-regions of the Eastern Cascades, Northeastern Sierra Nevada, and Western Great Basin, and presents work from these artists as they relate to ecology and society through their own layered dreams, visions, ideas of near futures, and deep pasts of this elusive and mysterious place.

In an indirect and limited glance, as through the side-mirror on the highway, or reflected image caught in surveillance lens or mountain creek, this exhibition wonders about the grainy seams and edges between the North American geo-regions of the Eastern Cascades, Northeastern Sierra Nevada, and Western Great Basin. With the hypothesis that a re-framing and blurred focus might help to see a subject anew, these fourteen artists engage in speculative strategies as they relate to ecology and society through their own layered dreams, visions, ideas of near futures and deep pasts of this elusive and mysterious place.

The focus on this particular part of the Intermountain Northwest identifies a region with much in common, yet perhaps without much understanding in the broader cultural imagination. Artists included might have a unique understanding and relationship with this place, yet might also live outside these soft boundaries, around the perimeter looking in or out, or have work that resonates well in this place. Ranging from absurdity and humor to horror, the paranormal, dystopia and utopia, work from fourteen artists provoke many ideas about this geographic psyche: the role of water in the desert, wildfire, volcanic and tectonic geology, certain climate and social collapses, exploitation, migration, genocide and violence, and articulating some visionary narrative that complicates these themes. Here the artists themselves employ varying approaches and useful terms such as geopoetics, meso-futurism, counter-mapping, experimental geography, deep ecology, photojournalism, Indigenous abstraction, among others.

The exhibition title serves as a reference and hypothetical negation of the 1996 long poem Mountains and Rivers Without End by poet Gary Snyder in 1996, hailed as a masterpiece of American poetry and considered a "fundamental wisdom text for the modern ecological movement". The poem, developed over nearly forty years, utilizes Buddhist philosophy, Jungian archetypal psychology, and varying ecological and mythological images together to outline a worldview and history, notably much of which occurs in places of reverence for Snyder, like Pyramid Lake, Black Rock Desert, across the Sierra and Cascades. Snyder returned to the University of Nevada, Reno in 1996 to produce an artist-book Finding the Space at the Black Rock Press in Department of Art, featuring four sections of Mountains and Rivers Without End before it's full publication. Together the form of the exhibition invokes shared qualities of cinema, poetry, and music, finding similarity and leaping associations across the visual and material culture of type-written poems, screenplays, detective novels, scientific field notes, and their shared inquiries into Mystery. What are some utopian aims of ecologic justice in the West? Who are the sad clowns, sentient aliens, broken heroes, future archeologists, spell-hurling witches, or super villains in the mythic story of mining and the internet in data centers, surveillance tech, and lithium extraction?

What does a near-future hyperlocal visual culture of grief look like?

What are the dreams of the trout and wild buckwheat?

Through conceptual, action-oriented and language-based works that engage with everyday life, Friedman challenges the notion of the artwork as a unique object. This unorthodox exhibition extends the length of the Lilley Museum’s Front Door Gallery and throughout the entire third floor of the University Foundation Arts Building.

At the conclusion of the exhibition, visitors will participate in dismantling the installation.

At the conclusion of the exhibition, visitors will participate in dismantling the installation.

This exhibition wil extend from the Front Door Gallery (Church Fine Arts) through the sky bridge (University Arts Building). Parking is available in the Whalen Parking Complex.

Hall Recital Hall

Presented by Sheppard Contemporary and Holland Project:

Marisa Anderson channels the history of the guitar and stretches the boundaries of tradition. Her playing is fluid, emotional, and masterful, featuring compositions and improvisations that re-imagine the landscape of American music. The New Yorker calls Anderson ‘one of the most distinctive guitar players of her generation’, and NPR refers to her as among ‘this era’s most powerful players’. Her music has been featured in Rolling Stone, NPR, The New York Times, Pitchfork, the BBC and The Wire. Festival appearances include Big Ears, Pitchfork Midwinter, Le Guess Who and the Copenhagen Jazz Festival. Anderson is the recipient of the 2025 Spark Award for Oregon Artists presented by the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation.

In addition to her solo work, Anderson is sought after as a collaborator and composer. Swallowtail, her second record in duo with drummer Jim White was released May 2024 on Thrill Jockey Records. 2024 also saw the release of the feature film score ‘ A Perfect Day For Caribou’, as well as appearances on records by Charlie Parr, Myriam Gendron and Big|Brave. In addition to multiple solo releases, past projects include 2021’s Lost Futures with guitarist William Tyler, and contributions to recordings by Matmos, Tara Jane O’Neil, Beth Ditto, Sharon Van Etten and Circuit Des Yeux, among others.

Classically trained, Anderson honed her skills playing in country, jazz and circus bands. Her current work is focused on a mid-20th century archive of recorded music from the Islamic world, Southeast Asia and the Soviet Union.

‘One of the best emotional mediums in the field of solo guitar, Anderson is a master of lovely melancholy.’ - Pitchfork

Marisa Anderson has work currently featured in Without Mountains & Rivers Without End. This performance is an extension of the work exhibited in the gallery, and you are invited to join us for a reception in Sheppard Contemporary before the show from 5:30–6:30 PM.

Doors at 6pm, Performance 7pm-9pm

At the conclusion of the exhibition, visitors will participate in dismantling the installation.

This exhibition wil extend from the Front Door Gallery (Church Fine Arts) through the sky bridge (University Arts Building). Parking is available in the Whalen Parking Complex.

At the conclusion of the exhibition, visitors will participate in dismantling the installation.

This exhibition wil extend from the Front Door Gallery (Church Fine Arts) through the sky bridge (University Arts Building). Parking is available in the Whalen Parking Complex.
